About Taj Fisherman's Cove Taj Fisherman's Cover, arguably the Best Luxury 5-star resort in South India, is built on the ramparts of old Dutch Fort, set amongst 22 acres of towering Casuarinas, is situated along Covelong Beach in Kanchipuram District of Chennai. The resort is 32 kms from the airport and 28 kms from the City Center. It has been transformed from a Dutch Fort alongside the most verdant strech of Bay of Bangal.
The Dutch in 18th century set up as a trading settlement here known as Goblon and built a Fort. The settlement did not survive and nothing of this Fort remains. In 1744 - 49, the Nawab of Arcot built a Fort at Covelong and named it Saadt Bandar, but it changed hands within a year as French sailors, in a ship anchored off Covelong, feigned illness and overpowered their benefactors. Two years later, in 1752, the English led by Robert Clive (who was later to preside over the destinies of the Indian, sub-continent) tried taking over but were defeated. After two setbacks, Clive rallied his men to take over the fort. Kovalam was thus a player in the Carnatic wars when European powers jockeyed for influence and power, and a trading interest on the Coromandel.
